Facebook has undergone a lot of changes since its launch and in September 2011 came Facebook Timeline which was one of the biggest transformation Facebook Profile has ever went through.
Facebook Timeline, appreciated by masses and also disliked by some but with more than 850 Million users, it’s difficult to please all.
But who thought of this concept to “tell the whole story of your life on a single page”, who gave shape to this thought and designed it so beautifully and what was the motivation behind it ?
We’ve got answers to all the questions.
Motivation behind Facebook Timeline:
- According to Stefan Parker (UI Engineer at Facebook), There were many motivations to create Timeline, but the 3 primary ones were:
- Change profile to a place that users could emotionally connect to.
- Give users a way to really express themselves.
- Connect to the new custom open graph and show aggregate summaries.
People responsible for Facebook Timeline are:
- Stefan Parker was the head User Interface Engineer (UIE) on this project (tasked with building the crazy and transformative ideas from the designers), and other UIEs were Yohann Richard, Matt Viscomi, Wei Yeh, Mike Pinkowish, Josh Duck, and Paul Shen.
- First iteration of Timeline (two-column layout) designed by.Joey Flynn and Francis Luu.
- Page layout, Cover at the top and Timeline “spine” designed by Nicholas Felton (best known for his Infographics).
- Time Slider and all its interactions first designed by Ryan Case.
- Navigation beneath the cover designed by Aaron Sittig.
- About tab, friends tab designed by Drew Hamlin.
